Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is your ardent desire: But turn not away (from a woman) altogether, so as to leave her (as it were) hanging (in the air). If ye come to a friendly understanding, and practise self- restraint, Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

You shall never be able to maintain real equality between wives, even though you are eager to. So, do not lean totally (towards one) and leave the other as suspended. If you act righteously and fear Allah, then, Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful.

Vous ne pourrez jamais être équitable entre vos femmes, même si vous en êtes soucieux. Ne vous penchez pas tout à fait vers l'une d'elles, au point de laisser l'autre comme en suspens. Mais si vous vous réconciliez et vous êtes pieux... donc Allah est, certes, Pardonneur et Miséricordieux.
Вы не сможете относиться к женам одинаково справедливо даже при сильном желании. Не наклоняйтесь же полностью к одной, оставляя другую словно висящей. Но если вы исправите положение и будете богобоязненны, то ведь Аллах – Прощающий, Милосердный.

Não podereis, jamais, ser eqüitativos com vossas esposas, ainda que nisso vos empenheis. Por essa razão, não declineis demasiadamente uma delas, deixando-a como se estivesse abandonada; porém, se vos reconciliardes e temerdes, sabei que Deus é Indulgente, Misericordiosíssimo.

Und ihr könnt zwischen den Frauen keine Gerechtigkeit ausüben, so sehr ihr es auch wünschen mögt. Aber neigt euch nicht gänzlich (einer) zu, so daß ihr die andere gleichsam in der Schwebe lasset. Und wenn ihr es wiedergutmacht und gottesfürchtig seid, so ist Allah Allverzeihend, Barmherzig.
